Big Brothers Big Sisters matches children ages 7 through 13 with mentors in professionally supported one-to-one relationships. We have mentoring programs in communities across Oxford, Androscoggin and Franklin Counties.
Matches come together through our two essential programs:
Community-based mentoring is the traditional Big Brothers Big Sisters relationship, where Bigs and Littles get together on their own to share fun activities they both enjoy. Matches meet for a total of six hours a month.
Getting together is a great time for both the Big and the Little. It doesn’t require a special occasion or expensive activities; just a few hours every month to share the simple things you already like to do. Things like….
- Shooting hoops
- Playing a board game
- Sharing a pizza
- Taking a walk in the park
- Or just hanging out and talking.
In school-based mentoring programs, Bigs and Littles meet for one-to-one mentoring in the classroom, school library, school computer room, neighborhood community center, or other set location. Bigs and Littles typically meet once a week to read together, play sports or computer games, or simply talk about life and personal issues – just as friends do.
School-based mentoring is not a tutoring program. However, research has shown that of all children matched with a Big in school:
- 58% improved their school performance
- 65% showed higher levels of self-confidence
- 55% had a better attitude toward school
Site-based Mentoring : Bigs and Littles meet once a week in schools, libraries and community centers, to talk and have fun. It’s not about being a tutor … it’s about being a friend.
